Why Chiropractic / Chiropractic for Posture

ARE YOU?

The kyphotic or forward bending of the upper back is normal and varies between 20 and 50 degrees. Mild increased forward curvature of the neck and upper back and rounding of the shoulders are quite common due to the modern posture. This produces a forward head carriage/position and a hump over time.

These changes create a negative self-image, a loss of height and pain/stiffness in the involved areas. Research has also shown other negative impacts on the health of the individual. These include headaches, degenerative changes in the spine and shoulders and breathing disturbances. (i.e. decreased movement of the lower chest wall and diminished respiratory function.) Forward head position was improved in these studies by chiropractic manual therapy, exercises and regular breaks from postural strain.

Poor posture has also been associated with heightened stress levels, circulatory problems and even decreased life expectancy. Poor posture leads to increased levels of cortisol (stress hormone) and decreased levels of testosterone. A sedentary lifestyle has also been shown to be linked to circulatory disorders and a decreased life expectancy. Excessive curvature of the upper back has been linked to cardiovascular disease. This is thought to be due to excessive stretching and irritation of the spinal cord and nerves.

One of the plagues of our modern life is musculoskeletal damage and arthritis due to daily posture and a sedentary life. These lead to stress syndromes, headaches, depression and even respiratory, circulatory and cardiovascular complications. Simple changes in posture, a visit to a chiropractor, muscular therapy and doing basic exercises two to three times a week can change that outcome, your quality of life and even your life expectancy.
